Adding pole dressage patterns into the training and education of my horses has been so beneficial for them and me.
For my more educated western dressage horse who is coincidentally also learning to jump, the introduction of poles in his flat work rides has helped to improve the elasticity and freedom of his movement and adjustability of his gaits. It has also helped him find confidence with poles as he starts his jumping education.
For my young, just started horse the introduction of poles around the arena has given him something to concentrate on where he can still get a bit distracted. They also helped him think about where he is putting his feet as well as improved the adjustability in his gaits.
And for me the patterns have helped me find more direction in my flat work rides. I can often fall into the trap of doing the same shapes and movements around the arena and these patterns gave me new things to try.

 EVA & ‘BACI’ (Warmblood. 14yo. 17.3hh)

‘Our first PoleDressage session was great for my 2* eventer & also for myself.

 

It teaches the importance of accuracy by giving obvious markers & the consequence of messing up a stride when you’re not accurate, which will transfer perfectly into the dressage arena.

 

The pattern really helped my 17.3hh Warmblood come over the back & step deeper underneath himself which is something he struggles with at times.

 

Working over poles is great for eventers, not only by engaging their core but also for making the horse more accountable for where they put their feet - which is vital for cross-country. It also connects their brain to their feet whilst encouraging correct, even paces .. something we should all be striving for.
